Irrigation installation and commissioning

We install irrigation systems and take them through testing, commissioning and handover, coordinating with the landscape and building services. We can work from an existing irrigation design or provide design and supply.

Installing the irrigation system

The installation scope is defined for each project, from pipework and watering equipment through to controls and irrigation plant.

Pipework and watering equipment

Mainline and distribution pipework carry water to the planting areas. We install dripline, tree irrigation and sprinklers to suit the design, coordinating their positions with the landscape layout and planting.

Valves and controls

Valve assemblies divide the system into watering zones. We install the associated irrigation controls, including conventional and two-wire systems, with equipment locations coordinated for operation and maintenance.

Pumps, tanks and filtration

Where required, the irrigation package can include storage tanks, pumping equipment and filtration. Their installation needs to be coordinated with space, access and the connections provided by the wider project.

Access for future maintenance

Valve chambers, filters, controllers and irrigation plant need to remain accessible after the landscape is complete. We consider access alongside equipment positioning and raise coordination requirements with the project team.

Coordinating irrigation with the wider works

Irrigation crosses several parts of a landscape or building project. Clear drawings, agreed responsibilities and the right installation sequence help the work fit around other trades.

Routes and locations

Pipe routes and equipment positions need to be coordinated with the landscape, waterproofing, drainage, structure and building services. This is particularly important on roofs, podiums and buildings with planting across several levels.

Access and installation sequence

We work with the project team to plan access and the sequence of irrigation work. Pipework and equipment that will become concealed need to be considered before finishes, planter filling or planting restrict access.

Connections and responsibilities

Water, power, drainage and any required control connections need to be identified. We agree which connections and associated works sit within the irrigation package and which are provided by others.

Outstanding information or changes to the landscape can affect the irrigation arrangement. We raise these matters with the relevant project team members so that the installation can proceed on a clear basis.

Testing the system and setting it to work

Testing and commissioning check the installed system and establish its initial operating settings. The checks are suited to the equipment and scope of the project.

Pipework and equipment checks

We test the installed pipework and check the operation of the irrigation equipment. Pressure and flow checks help establish whether the available supply supports the system’s requirements.

Zone and control checks

We check that valves operate, the intended watering zones respond and the controller operates the system. Where pumps and associated irrigation plant are included, their operation is checked as part of commissioning.

Initial settings and records

We programme the initial watering schedule and record the relevant settings and commissioning checks. These settings provide a starting point for operation and will need review as planting establishes and seasonal conditions change.

Commissioning needs the relevant water supply, power and connected services to be available. We coordinate these requirements with the project team when planning the work.

Information for the people operating the system

The handover package brings together the information needed to understand, operate and maintain the irrigation system.

Depending on the agreed scope, it can include:

  • Operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Equipment information and relevant manufacturer literature.
  • Commissioning records and initial controller settings.
  • Record drawings showing the installed arrangement.

We agree the documentation requirements with the project team so that the handover reflects the installed system and the irrigation scope.

Working from an existing irrigation design

If an irrigation design or specification is already in place, we can review the available information to establish an installation and supply scope. We identify any details that need clarification and agree the extent of any design work required.

Discuss your installation requirements

Tell us where the project is, its current stage and the irrigation work you need. If drawings or a specification are available, let us know and we can agree how to share them.

Useful information includes:

  • Project name and location.
  • Landscape drawings and planting information.
  • Any irrigation drawings, specification or equipment schedule.
  • The required installation, commissioning and handover scope.
  • Relevant tender dates, programme requirements and access constraints.
  • Available information about the water supply, power and other connections.

If the scope is still developing, send a brief outline of the project and the information currently available.
