Irrigation design and specification

Practical irrigation designs that give project teams a clear basis for equipment selection, coordination and installation.

We develop the irrigation arrangement around the landscape, site conditions and available water supply. Design can be commissioned separately or as part of a wider supply and installation scope.

A design that considers how the system will be installed

The irrigation layout needs to suit the planting and work with the wider project. We consider how water reaches each area, where equipment can be located and how the system will be operated and maintained.

The landscape and watering zones

Beds, trees and lawns can require different watering arrangements. We plan the irrigation equipment and zones around the landscape layout and the requirements identified in the brief.

The water supply

Available flow, pressure and the proposed water source inform the system arrangement. Where storage, pumping or filtration is required, these form part of the agreed design scope.

Pipework and equipment locations

Pipe routes, valves, controllers and irrigation plant need to fit around the landscape and building services. Access for installation and future maintenance is considered alongside equipment placement.

Controls and operation

The control arrangement needs to suit the number and location of watering zones and the intended operation of the system. We identify the relevant control equipment and coordination requirements.

Clear information for the project team

The design deliverables are agreed to suit the project stage and intended use. They can include:

Irrigation drawings

Layouts showing the irrigation arrangement, watering zones, pipework and equipment locations, with installation notes and details appropriate to the agreed scope.

Specifications and equipment schedules

Information identifying the proposed components and their requirements. Equipment schedules support pricing, procurement and review of the irrigation package.

Assumptions and coordination requirements

A clear record of the information used, outstanding requirements and limits of the design scope. This helps the project team understand what needs to be confirmed before installation.

Where included, technical submittals and manufacturer literature support equipment review and approval. Commissioning records and operation and maintenance manuals are separate handover deliverables.

How the design develops

  1. Review the brief

We establish the areas to be irrigated, the required service and the project stage. We review the available landscape information and identify any further details needed.

  2. Develop the arrangement

We plan the watering zones, equipment, pipework and controls around the project requirements and the available water supply information.

  3. Coordinate the interfaces

We work with the relevant project team members to review equipment locations, pipe routes, access and connections to other services.

  4. Issue the agreed information

We prepare the drawings, schedules and specifications included in the scope, identifying any assumptions or outstanding matters that affect their use.

Design as a separate service

You can commission Dripmatic to prepare an irrigation design without appointing us to install the system. We agree the deliverables, intended use and responsibilities at the outset.

We can also review existing irrigation drawings or specifications to help establish a supply or installation scope. The extent of the review and any design changes are agreed for the project.

What helps us get started

Useful information includes:

  • Project name and location
  • Current project stage and intended use of the design
  • Landscape drawings and planting information
  • Areas to be included in the irrigation scope
  • Any existing irrigation drawings or specification
  • Water supply information, where available
  • Relevant tender or programme dates

If some information is unavailable, tell us what you have. We can identify the further details needed and any assumptions that would need to be agreed.

Discuss your irrigation design

Tell us about the landscape, the project stage and the design information you need. If drawings or a specification are available, let us know so we can agree how to share them.
